Welcome to Leila Hancox Counselling & Psychotherapy

A confidential space to explore the thoughts, feelings and challenges in your life.

About me

I trained at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, based in West Hampstead, London and gained an MA in Existential Psychotherapy and Counselling in 2018, becoming a fully registered member of the UKCP shortly after.

I have over 10 years experience with adults in a wide range of settings including Imperial College NHS Trust, Mind and various other charities. I'm currently based in Gloucestershire where I combine my private practice work with some work for Gloucestershire Counselling Service and various employee assistance programmes.

I am also currently undergoing training as a focusing-oriented therapist with the London Focusing with the aim of integrating focusing as a strand into my therapeutic work.

Counselling and psychotherapy:

tailored to your needs

I offer both short and long term counselling and psychotherapy, depending on your needs and preferences.

We can discuss this at the start and see what works best for you. Maybe you have a very clear idea of what it is that you want out of the process or maybe you're not sure, even though you have a feeling something's not quite right or there's something you'd like to explore.

Either way is absolutely fine and I am able to work with you where you are at and as things arise throughout the work.

My approach

I approach my work with, as far as possible, an open and holistic attitude so that I can listen without making assumptions about what it is that you bring to each session. I put a lot of emphasis on the creation of a mutually beneficial therapeutic relationship so as to enable, over time, the emergence of greater clarity about problems and situations with which you may be grappling. This increased clarity can benefit you, your relationships with others and with life in general in many different ways.

Specialist areas

Although I am familiar with, and may draw on, a range of therapeutic approaches in my work, I specialise in existential psychotherapy and counselling, which means my work is informed by philosophical ideas. I view therapy as more of an art form than a science in line with the innate complexity of our nature. As such, I engage with ideas in ways which prioritise you as an individual. Whichever ideas I may hold in the back of my mind whilst working with you, I strive to hold them lightly so that they don't get in the way of your experience as it reveals itself in our sessions.

Working together

No two existential therapists are alike and the therapeutic relationship that we create together is equally unique. Our work may include working with the past, present and future as well as acknowledging the significance of our nature as embodied beings and our relationships with both the human and non-human world.
